La Sagrada Familia Highlights: What to See Inside

La Sagrada Familia is big enough that it's easy to miss things on a first visit. Here's what to slow down for.

The Nativity Facade

Facing sunrise, and largely built under Gaudí's own direction, this facade is dense with carved plants, animals, and figures telling the story of Christ's birth. Look for the two turtles at the base of its columns — one representing land, one sea — and the warm, organic style that's completely different from the facade on the opposite side of the building.

The Passion Facade

Facing sunset, this facade tells the story of Christ's death in a deliberately harsh, angular style — stripped-down and stark by comparison to the Nativity side. Look up and to the left of the central door for the magic square: a grid of numbers that adds up to 33 in every direction.

The interior: columns and stained glass

This is the part photos rarely do justice. Inside, tree-like stone columns branch overhead into a vaulted canopy, and light pours through stained glass that shifts from cool blues and greens on the Nativity side to warm reds and oranges on the Passion side as the sun moves. Try to visit both morning and later in the day if your schedule allows — the light changes the whole space.

The towers

Tower access (available on select ticket types) takes you up by elevator for panoramic views over Barcelona, with a narrow spiral staircase — over 300 steps — for the way down. It's a highlight worth planning for if you're not affected by heights or tight spaces, but skip it if you are.

The crypt and museum

Below the main altar, the crypt is where Gaudí himself is buried, and it's included with general admission. A small on-site museum traces the building's history and construction, including models that show how Gaudí worked out the structure's shape — well worth a few minutes before or after your main visit.
